There are many reasons for hair loss. It can be because of stress, hormonal, autoimmune, nutrient deficiency, or because of your hairstyle. Knowing the cause can help treat hair loss in a more effective manner. Some reasons for hair loss are:
1. Stress-induced hair loss:
Hair loss due to
stress is also called "telogen effluvium". Any stressful situation
like divorce, pregnancy, or trauma can cause hair loss. However, the stress can
be either physical, mental, or emotional. Basically, our hair cycle has different
phases; growth, resting, and shedding phases. All hair is at a different phase
but due to stress, their phase shifts to the shedding phase and causes hair
loss.
Treatment:
After elevation of stress, the hair starts growing back and within a few months returns to its original volume. Supplements that have curcumin, Boswellia, and grape extracts can cure hair loss due to stress.
2. Alopecia areata
Alopecia areata is an
autoimmune disease in which our own immune system attacks hair follicles and
causes hair loss. The person will have bald patches all over the scalp but hair
loss can occur at any part of the body like eyelashes, eyebrows, etc.
Treatment:
Essential oils,
garlic gel, and onion juice have been seen to help such people. Hair transplant
also helps such people since it's hereditary and cannot be prevented.
3. Hormonal changes:
Hair Loss due to
hormonal change is called female pattern baldness and male pattern baldness in females
and males respectively. It is collectively called androgenic alopecia. It
usually starts after puberty but in females, it can occur after menopause.
Treatment:
Supplements that
reduce dihydrotestosterone or testosterone help improve hair growth. Also saw
palmetto, green tea extracts, pumpkin seed oil, and Panax ginseng can also
help.
4. Nutrient deficiency:
Hair loss can also be
due to malnutrition. Your body may be deficient in substances that take part in
hair growth.
Mineral deficiency:
Minerals
like iron and zinc deficiency can cause hair loss. Supplements can help improve
hair growth.
Vitamin deficiency:
Vitamins like niacin biotin
and vitamin D are needed for hair growth so their deficiency can cause hair
loss. Niacin deficiency causes pellagra and it is caused due to unusual eating
habits like eating uncooked eggs. Biotin deficiency is extremely rare.
Supplements can help
reduce hair loss.
5. Age:
As people age, hair
follicles don't grow the way they used to, so old age is also a cause of hair
loss.
6. Cancer treatment:
Cancer treatment
involves chemotherapy and radiation that causes hair loss.
Treatment:
After therapy, hair
grows back in a few months. You can also use a cap to prevent hair loss.
7. Scalp infection:
Scalp infections like
ringworm can cause hair loss. The affected area is all flaky and inflamed and
it kind of looks like there are small black dots on it.
Treatment:
Antibiotics and antifungals
can help treat the infection.
8. Traction alopecia:
Certain hairstyles
that pull hair tightly like ponytails and braids can also cause hair loss. It
is because the hair follicles are pulled and they can be damaged. Such hair
loss is called traction alopecia.
Treatment:
Letting your hair
loose a bit and not tying hair tightly can prevent hair loss.
9. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome:
Polycystic Ovary
Syndrome is due to hormonal imbalance and causes cysts in the ovaries. Its
symptoms also involve hair loss. Knowing this early can help prevent excessive
hair loss.
10. Birth Control Pills:
Taking Birth control
pills disrupts females' natural hormonal balance and this can cause hair loss.
Treatment:
Taking pills that
have less amount of androgen-like Desogen, ortho-cept and ortho-cyclen can help
reduce hair loss. Also taking non-hormonal types of birth control pills can
help prevent hair loss.
11. Trichotillomania:
Trichotillomania is a psychological disorder it is triggered by stress. In this, such people unintentionally pull their hair as a stress reliever. This can damage their hair follicles and cause hair loss.
Some tips for hair care:
●
Don't tie your hair tightly and
avoid hairstyles that can damage your hair.
●
Straightening and curling hair can
damage your hair as heat can damage the protein structure.
●
Use multivitamin tablets as per
doctor's prescription.
●
Try to eliminate stress and take
things easy.
Conclusion:
Although a little
hair loss is completely normal and you won't even notice it since hair grows
back but if you notice a sudden or more than normal hair loss then there is a
problem. In this case, you should seek your doctors' advice as eliminating so
many options and reaching a single conclusion is difficult. So always be
careful while taking action yourself as this can even deteriorate the situation even more.
